SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN PIRATES

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

Director: Cecilia Mooney

Writers: Cecilia Mooney & Missy Mooney

Venue: The Meteor 30 September – 4 October 2020

Stories and More have returned with their ninth production at The Meteor, Snow White and the Seven Pirates. This family-friendly original theatrical production is perfect school holiday entertainment.

Co-written by Cecilia Mooney and daughter Missy Mooney, Snow White and the Seven Pirates is part fairy tale, part Maori myth and legend. The mention of the Waikato River, Hamilton and Raglan thrilled the younger members of the audience, and in turn helped suspend reality and transport the theatregoers into the New Zealand landscape.

Missy Mooney as the Pirate Queen was potent in the strong, lead role. Newcomer to the stage Wolfgang Mayall got the first laugh of the day and continued to entertain throughout. The audience was particularly delighted with the performance of the littlest cast member Olive Mooney.

All the cast are to be congratulated on their heartfelt deliveries, and across the stage there were many clever moments. They were all resourceful in their use of expression and interaction with the attractive set and fun props. A skilled director, Cecilia Mooney ensured the play moved at an ideal pace with energy.

Horomona Horo and Dr Jeremy Mayall’s composition provided an ethereal soundscape that complimented the story flawlessly. The costumes and lighting were designed with flair and overall the show was visually appealing.

The beauty of the Stories and More company is their total inclusiveness and ability to create roles suited to all actors, regardless of age or theatrical experience. Stories and More are an absolute asset to Hamilton, and their alumni is becoming more impressive by the year, with acting credits starting to extend across the globe.

The first three of six performances are already sold out. Snow White and the Seven Pirates is a treasure chest full of wholesome adventure for children and clever writing for adults. This show is a school holiday must-see.
